New Year, New Goal: Visualize Your Future as a Trainer

Dec 17, 2019

With 2019 in the rear view mirror and 2020 unfolding in front of you, now is the perfect time to pause and take stock of what you are doing, and where you are as a trainer.

Do you want to be doing more or doing differently as a trainer, but can’t quite put your finger on what that is, much less how to start doing it?

This visualization and goal setting activity completed by some Jefferson Region trainers at a recent
Trainer Connections: After Hours event may be just the thing to help you figure this out.

  1. Download and open or print the Trainer Goal Setting Graphic Organizer and the SMART Goal
    Action Pla
    n.
  2. Close your eyes and for two minutes (set a timer), picture in your mind what it looks like for you as a trainer in five years – DREAM BIG – NO LIMITS – What kinds of trainings are you doing? Where and with whom are you doing them? Who are the participants attending these trainings? How often are you training?
  3. Write or draw the important elements of the image you had in your mind into the top box of the Trainer Goal Setting Graphic Organizer. Use the back of the page if you printed it out and need more space, or expand the box (and scoot the other boxes down the document) to encompass the space you need for this if you’re working with it on your computer electronically.
  4. Select one element from the top box that you can state as a goal and start working on right away and write/draw it in the middle box.
  5. Think about what exactly is required to achieve this and write those things in the box at the bottom left of this page.
  6. Next, think about the resources you have at your disposal to help you achieve this, and then write all these resources in the other box at the bottom of the page.
  7. Now, look at the SMART Goal Action Plan document. Rewrite your goal as a SMART goal statement in the top box, using the SMART acronym listed in the middle of the page as a guide.
  8. Reflect on why this goal is important to you, and write that in the second box.
  9. Fill in the Action Plan box now (referring back to the completed graphic organizer for details), including all the specific actions themselves, who will complete each of them, and when exactly they will be completed…building up to a full three month time period.

After doing all this, email copies of these pages to your Training Coach for review, supportive feedback, and a firm commitment to helping you achieve this goal and others as you seek to realize that vision of yourself as a trainer five years from now.

If you want to do this, but find yourself struggling with any part of this visualization and goal-setting process, don’t hesitate to reach out to your Training Coach for assistance with it.  We’re here to help!
